Take a moment and think back to a time that you were completely immersed, focused and enjoying what you were doing. Athletes call this moment the zone. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a positive psychologist, calls it "flow." He has pioneered work to better understand happiness, creativity, human fulfillment and talks about this notion of flow in, an oldie but goodie, TED talk.
Happiness is something that everyone is searching for and researchers have been studying for decades to discover the secret to. Especially in work, “doing what you love” is talked about all the time. That’s why Mihaly’s concept of flow is so interesting to entrepreneurs.
“When we are involved in [creativity], we feel that we are living more fully than during the rest of life,” Mihaly says.
He describes “flow” as the creative moment when a person is completely involved in an activity for its own sake. Of course, flow can’t happen in all moments throughout our workdays because there are tasks that are just plain ol’ boring but absolutely necessary to running a business. But, the more we try to engage ourselves in moments of flow during our workdays the happier we will be.
What that flow is for you will be different than it is for someone else. Figuring out what engages you totally in enjoyment and fitting in more time to do it, seems to be the key to making your workday more engaging, fun and fulfilling.
Do yourself a favor and check out the video below. The first few minutes lag a bit but stick with it and you’ll get a clear understanding of this intriguing concept and examples of what flow means to different people like CEOs, athletes and writers.
At the end, see if you can indentify any moments of “flow” in your workday and share your insights in the comments below. If you aren’t able to find flow moments, share why you think that it is and what you think you could do to create some flow.
Thanks for reading and be well!
